The Nitty Gritty On: This Business Journey

Hello!!! First off, I'm Leslie, the one who decided to jump in and start this crazy little thing called The ZigZag Stripe. I know that many of our customers and followers have questions about me, the business life and all the things that come with it. Well, you are in luck! I will be answering questions throughout the weeks to come to let you see deeper into this life I have as a mom, a wife and a business owner. I hope you enjoy!

How did you start the zig zag stripe and is it everything you hoped it would be?

Shae Keyes Hunt

In April 2013, I was having late night conversation with two of my closest girlfriends. At the time, I was looking for a change in employment. I was a Premier Designs Jewelry Lady for 7 years before ZZS and the season of my life changed and I was ready for something different. I had been an online boutique shopper myself at several other popular boutiques. I had mentioned that I would love to do something like that to my friends. They, of course, encouraged me. I ended up sharing the idea with the hubs. He was a little hesitant at first, but we have been married long enough that he knew I wouldn’t give up if he wasn’t on board. So, we took the leap. We became an “official” business on April 15, 2013. Yep, tax day. I will NEVER forget our anniversary date! In our first month, we did over $5,000 in revenue. I was shocked. Never in a million years did I plan for it to be so popular. I just wanted to replace my previous income. We ended our first year with six figures in revenue and started our second year on the road to becoming a million dollar company, so, is it everything I hoped for it to be? It’s more than I EVER expected. Has it been hard? Absolutely. I’ve poured a lot of sweat and tears into ZZS and said a lot of prayers, but I’m so excited to see where we are headed. We have more for our future and I can’t wait to see what God has planned for us.

Where it all began.

Where it all began. Yes, those were all the day's orders on the floor in the center of the picture.

The ZigZag Stripe now ... let's just say it's grown. A LOT! LOL! We have out grown our current space and will be moving to a bigger space next week!

What's your reaction when you randomly interact with someone who's wearing a piece from ZZS and they don't know who you are? Do you tell them?
Courtney 'Baron' Mathews

My first reaction is to squeal like a little girl inside. It’s a pretty incredible feeling to see one of my designs on a perfect stranger in public. I try to stay as cool and collected as possible and just compliment them on their ZZS attire. I do always ask where they got it, I just love to hear them say The ZigZag Stripe! LOL! Silly I know. I typically never tell them who I am because it’s not about me, it’s because of the good Lord above that I am where I am, no need to boast about it.

What is some great advice you could give to ladies who have a dream of starting their own business? I would love to do what you do!!

Starting a business …. NEVER.GIVE.UP. and give it all to God! Being an entrepreneur just runs in my blood. I’ve been self employed since I was 20. I’ve always had a passion for business and to be honest, I’m a work for myself kinda gal. I will say, it’s not for everyone. You have to have a plan, you have to have REALLY great work ethic and be able to see the big picture down the road. There is going to be good days and bad. It can’t be about money. It has to be about your desire to create something that nobody else offers.
